Museum in the Alpine region
The Forum of Swiss History Schwyz opened in 1995 and is the cultural
seat of the Swiss National Museum in central Switzerland. The building,
which in former times was used first to store grain and then defence
equipment, now houses one of the key museums of cultural history in the
Alpine region. The museum’s exterior is a Baroque granary and arsenal
dating back to 1711, while the interior has been designed in a
contemporary style, with large spaces. The Forum of Swiss History Schwyz
is both a modern history museum and a place to experience and encounter
the country’s cultural history. On four floors, the museum focuses on
the culture and everyday life of people in the area we now call
Switzerland, between 1300 and 1800. More than 600 valuable, informative
items from all parts of Switzerland are on view. Interactive information
points, audio stations and PC terminals all help to bring Swiss history
alive. Topical, temporary exhibitions, events focusing on cultural
history, discussions, educational offerings and lectures make the Forum
of Swiss History Schwyz a vital cultural platform in central
Switzerland. A friendly cafeteria, as well as an attractive museum shop,
complete the range of services available to visitors.
